Beach Evaluation ~ Leo Carillo
Team
members follow along as candidates demonstrate their ability to make a
successful surf entry in the prone position. This type of entry would be
used if a diver were to be knocked down by a wave in the surf zone.
Candidates
demonstrate a number of surf entry techniques. Here two divers are shown
entering with fins in hand.
Divers
enter the surf wearing their fins in this photo.
Senior
Deputy Frank Underlin joins us for the day to participate in the training.
Below are photos of single and
multiple person carries during simulated rescue scenarios.

Everyone goes back in for a
final rinse before moving on to the next phase of the evaluation.
The
group can be seen exiting the water after a 500+ yard scuba surface swim
down to the next training area.
Team member Steve Giles supervises as candidates demonstrate mastery of
rock wash-in techniques. In this exercise, candidates learn to rely on
team members positioned as look-outs to read the incoming swell. One
member was in charge of signalling divers when it was safe to enter.
Candidate
John Jackson watches and waits for the signal to enter.
Divers
know not to hesitate when conditions are right for an entry.
With
proper timing, the water does all the work taking divers out to sea and
bringing them back to shore.

All
candidates successfully demonstrated sandy beach and rocky shore entries
and exits.
